BluePrint for Success

Why re-invent the wheel?
All organisations have some individuals who are more successful than others in their role. The challenge is how to replicate their results. The strategies they use to achieve outstanding performances are rather like diamonds in the dust - hidden beneath the surface. A method of mining is needed to bring them to light and make them accessible to all. We call this 'BluePrinting'.

Return on Investment

Training that produces Results
. Evaluating the impact of training on business results has sometimes been called the 'holy grail of training'; it is something which is highly desirable, but difficult and time-consuming to achieve.

At Communicate the subject of training evaluation fascinates us as our daily mission is helping our clients create a sustainable competitive edge. Measuring the effectiveness and return on investment of our programmes and processes is vital to the strength of our brand and the added value we are able to bring to both clients and individual delegates.

“I have been asked to invigorate the weekly team brief in our stores. I need an ice-breaker that requires no equipment, can be done standing up and can be delivered by a manager without needing any training. I need something I can e-mail.”
HR Manager - Retail
Try “Share a Win” - This is a useful exercise to raise energy levels early in a team brief or training session. It also introduces ‘discovery learning’ and emphasises the fact that the participants can contribute. It takes about ten minutes. Ask the participants to think of a recent ‘win’ in their role that involved dealing effectively with customers. Let them think for about 30 seconds and then ask them to stand up and go and find someone they do not usually work with and share their ‘win’ with each other. Not only is this motivational but they learn something too. You can then reinforce the fact that they found it enjoyable and that you want their ideas and thoughts throughout the team brief or training session.

“My manager wants to know how we can evaluate our proposed training programme - any suggestions?”
Legal Secretary

You are quite right to be considering evaluation during the planning and design phase, so many people only think about it after they have got the programme up and running. If you know your outcomes and how you will measure them, then your programme design will be much more robust and effective. I would need more details to offer specific advice, so please get back in touch. I am also sending you a copy of our ‘Return on Investment' from our Food for Thought page.

“We need to improve commercial skills but can’t afford to send our managers on an MBA. Do you know of any other more cost effective qualifications we can consider that would develop a similar business competence?”
T&D Manager - Housing Association

Consider EBC*L - The European Business Competence* Licence is new to the UK but well established in Europe and is recognised for developing commercial know-how. In fact it is often referred to as the ‘mini MBA’. It can be achieved in as little as 30 hours of study, part course and part home study. It can also be tailored to your organisation and combined with a Finance for Non-Financial Managers Course.
