The Brief
“Your communication is only as good as the response it gets” . . . this was the starting point for our assistance in developing the communication of experienced project managers. For, although technically competent, they recognised that they were missing deadlines due to misunderstandings or lack of support. Some described it as if ‘walking on egg shells’, for fear of getting the wrong reaction.
The Solution
We designed a highly practical programme, with much of the course consisting of simulated project situations that called for clear and effective communication to those who implement the project plan. This included some ‘testing’ moments influencing the ‘sponsor’ to gain support and commitment to the project and access to resources.
As the final exercise was run over an extended time, it also required the skilful promoting of the project and keeping the team motivated. In addition to developing their communication and influencing skills, the managers jointly reviewed and improved the project communication processes at the Financial Times, implementing the changes upon their return to work.
