Innovation very often leads to successful change in work practices and company strategy. For this to happen, every team must challenge accepted norms and embrace more creative methods of idea generation.
The Solution
GKN recognised the importance of fresh thinking in their need to diversify their product base. The key was to create an environment where people were inspired to propose new and profitable ideas. In particular, the plan was to stimulate innovation from the factory floor throughout the group.
The holistic approach included winning active sponsorship from the Directors; a web-based idea registration system; ensuring access for all with ‘Intranet Pods’ on the shop floor; establishing a method for responding and validating each and every idea and a monthly ‘innovation miles’ reward and recognition scheme. To encourage participation we trained a team of facilitators to guide and support individuals in each company.
