Case Study : Creating the Environment

Operations Director

The Brief
Sometimes a change in the structure of a department/organisation generates the need for a change of style or approach. Accent Group wanted leaders to create an environment that encouraged and rejuvenated team members to discover ideas and approaches for themselves - in other words 'an environment where everyone can do a good job'.

The Solution
As Dr W E Deming astutely observed: successful change starts with personal transformation. Therefore, effective culture change starts with raising awareness of current individual behaviour traits, particularly those of the leaders. We agreed with the HR team that the programme needed to help people explore new perspectives of ‘the way we do things around here’ - eliminating negative behaviours and replacing them with those that support the future vision.

The design was for all managers to cover the same core material, whilst allowing for diversity in how the learning is applied (to suit the differing functions/specialisms). This provided a common language and facilitated communications throughout the organisation.

Examples of the effectiveness of this programme were the renewed vigour with which people committed to the goals of the team, and language changing from ‘the boss wants’ into ‘we want’. By pro-actively empowering members to shape their own future, the resulting sense of responsibility is phenomenal.
