It is now widely accepted that ‘change is the only constant’. Yet it would be naive to believe that workforces simply take all changes in their stride. When organisations undertake major change, demands are placed upon employees that initially result in feelings that tend to lurk beneath the surface. As people feel increasingly at the mercy of external forces … that others are metaphorically ‘pulling their strings’ … their focus moves inwards and a common reaction of self-protection emanates. Out of this, symptoms such as: blame, an unwillingness to accept responsibility, poor co-operation etc may grow. |
