Case Study : Virtual Teamwork

The Brief
There was a need to establish a new style of working within Sybase Europe. The market demanded a move away from traditional products to more complex ones that would add value for clients at increased levels. These new products required the expertise of many different specialist departments covering all European territories, and this collaboration had to be achieved within the hectic world of information technology.

The Solution
We took approximately 120 members of the Customer Service and Support functions to ‘Club Med’ on the Côte d’Azure. They were immersed in a 48 hour conference that dramatised the importance of cross-functional co-operation. This comprised a series of key note seminars, workshops and team meetings. To maintain energy levels and to illustrate the benefits of teamwork, we injected a selection of motivational activities.

One such project was ‘Photo Finish’. Designed to test their ingenuity and ability to think laterally, the teams engaged both creativity and influencing skills to produce a set of photographs in which they were the stars. All the team members needed to be actively involved for the final submissions and to lead to a high score, collaboration was essential. It proved to be a novel and powerful way to show a very different perspective on the benefits of cross-functional teamwork.
